“I spent Christmas 2005 at the Laxmi Vilas with my wife and 4 children. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay and, despite the time of year, it was very pleasant to sit out around the pool (although the water was freezing!) and to play croquet on the lawn. The birdwatching excursions to Keoladeo Ghana National Park were fantastic, especially the boat trip, and enjoyed by all the family.”
Built in 1887 for the younger brother of the Maharajah of Bharatpur, the delightful Laxmi Vilas Palace was converted into a hotel in 1994 and has been sensitively renovated to meet the requirements of the modern traveller.
The palace is still in the hands of the present generation of the royal family who extend a warm welcome and who personally supervise the preparation for the extensive a la carte menu, offering both continental and local dishes. From the charming courtyard to the newly refurbished rooms, the true old-style manner is preserved throughout. The palace offers a lively fusion of Rajput and Mughal architecture and the family's aim is to provide guests with the tranquility and peace of a home away from home.
The rooms are not luxurious but provide a comfortable stay in the atmosphere of a bygone age, with period fittings and furniture. All rooms have a private bathroom. There is a pleasant dining room and in 2005 the hotel added a large modern swimming pool for the enjoyment of their guests.
