Since the completion of Route 1 (the 'Ring Road')around Iceland in 1974 and the tarmacking of many of Iceland’s roads, driving has become a real pleasure. Our self-drive tours provide the opportunity to explore Iceland at your own pace. We will pre-book your accommodation so you know you will have a relaxing evening ahead after your day on Iceland’s open roads. To assist you further, on your arrival we will provide a Map of Iceland, a comprehensive route planner and information guide about driving in Iceland.

DRIVING IN ICELAND

Drive on the right, keep your headlights and seatbelts on at all times and enjoy the freedom of the open road. All roads are easy to follow and are numbered. Highland routes are also signed but some have unbridged rivers and need extra care and should not be attempted alone! Your Road Guide will keep you on the right track.

 

AGE AND DRIVING LICENCE

 

The minimum age for driving a hired car in Iceland is 21 years and 25 years for a jeep. All European and US driving licences are valid in Iceland. Visitors from other countries should check with their local motoring organisation.

 

ROAD AND TRAFFIC REGULATIONS

International road signs and regulations apply. Many rural roads are gravel and are not suitable for fast driving. The general speed limit is 50 km/h in urban areas; 80 km/h on gravel roads and 90 km/h on hard surfaces. Watch out for sheep and blind hills. Refer to your road guide for a comprehensive list of regulations.

If you drive on any highland road you must use a 4-wheel drive jeep.
